Breast Reduction Surgery in Miami

Medical Review by Dr. Richard Vagley MD

Breast reduction or mammoplasty surgery is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the breasts by removing fat, breast tissue, and skin, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola. However, women with large breasts may have some problems due to this excess weight, such as back and neck pain, skin irritations under the breast, and breathing problems.

The purpose of mammoplasty surgery or breast reduction is to provide women with smaller breasts and with a more symmetrical shape to the rest of their body. In addition, it seeks to reduce and reshape the breasts, placing the nipple-areola in its correct position. In most cases, we wait until the breast is fully developed. However, it can be performed earlier if the physical problems are fundamental.

We use General Anesthesia During Mammoplasty Surgery

The operation is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon removes the skin, gland, and excess fat, places the nipple in its correct location, and then reshapes the remaining breast. After the operation, a bra bandage is placed and changed after 24-48 hours.
During the first consultation, the plastic surgeon will evaluate the size and shape of the breasts, the skin’s firmness, and your general state of health. A breast exploration will also be performed. In some cases, a mammographic study will be requested according to the patient’s age.

Be Sincere in Your Consultation

You should sincerely state your expectations so that the plastic surgeon shows you the alternatives available for your problem, with the risks and limitations of each of them.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, with the patient remaining asleep during the operation.

After a breast reduction, you can return to work in 2 or 3 weeks. Although you can make almost everyday life in a few days, you should limit strenuous physical activity for a few weeks until you recover from the operation. For 1 or 2 weeks, it is advisable to avoid sexual intercourse so that the incisions do not swell; for 3 or 4 weeks, avoid intense physical contact with the breasts. It is usual for trim crusts or a little fluid to appear through the incisions. Your plastic surgeon will see you during the months following surgery to see the evolution. If you have any discomfort between visits or any doubts about what you should or should not do, do not hesitate to call them.

Miami Breast Reduction Surgery FAQ

Breast reduction surgery is a safe technique, as long as a qualified plastic surgeon performs it. However, as with any operation, there can always be complications and associated risks.
If you are a smoker or take any medication or vitamin if you have previous pregnancies, and if you plan to become pregnant again, you should tell your doctor that it is vital to evaluate your case and offer the best option. Do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have, especially those related to your expectations about the results.
Breast reduction leaves permanent and visible scars, although they can be hidden under a bra or bikini. Scarring problems are more common in smokers. Some patients may experience a partial or sometimes total decrease in nipple sensation. In addition, the ability to breastfeed may be affected after a reduction.
It is important to remember that after reduction, scars are significant and permanent. However, your plastic surgeon will do his best to make them as inconspicuous as possible. Over time, the spots will become less noticeable.
It will take a few months after a breast reduction for your breasts to take on their final appearance; even so, your breasts will change with normal hormonal stimuli, pregnancy, or weight changes. It may take some time to get used to your new body image. However, if your expectations are realistic, you will be delighted with the result of your breast reduction.

The final breast size should be previously agreed upon between surgeon and patient based on anatomical features and safety criteria.

But in most cases, we always try to individualize and evaluate in a personalized way to obtain the best possible result.

Although breastfeeding has no disadvantage and most patients who have undergone a breast reduction can do so without any problem, it should be kept in mind that it may not be possible and that the risk of mastitis is also increased.

Yes, we even observe that many women with huge breasts end up with marks and sagging in the shoulders due to the weight supported by the bra straps on the shoulders.

So if there are back problems and an oversized breast, a breast reduction can be a great relief for the back, which translates into an improvement.

Yes, every breast reduction involves molding and repositioning of the breast in its correct place.

The breast is not only reduced but also molded and lifted.

In what cases is breast reduction recommended?

Breast reduction surgery is indicated especially in these situations:

  • Neck and back pain due to excessive breast weight.
  • Skin irritation due to moisture and friction of the breasts to the chest.
  • Breathing problems.

Usually, almost all breast reductions require an inverted T-shaped scar since, in 100% of cases of breast hypertrophy, we are going to have breast sagging, and we are going to remove skin and breast tissue while lifting and shaping the breast in its correct place.

Yes, it is possible to perform a reduction mammoplasty with a prosthesis, in this case, the prosthesis, rather than to provide volume, we use it to improve the shape and provide volume in the upper pole or slightly in the neckline.

Recovery from breast surgery is not very painful and relatively fast and comfortable, so it is expected that after 7-9 days, we can resume a quiet office life. In two weeks, we can lead a practical everyday life without much effort. However, for sports and intense efforts, we recommend waiting a month.
